Cordless Power Tools
The market for cordless power tools has grown dramatically in the last 10 years in terms of the range of products available, and is now the fastest growing segment in the power tool industry.
- Battery Technology – The original NiMH and NiCd rechargeable batteries have led the way, but in the last few years the fastest growing segment is the new Lithium ion (li-ion) batteries. These offer nearly 40 percent more power than older models, and have the added advantage of being much lighter and offering a much longer runtime.
- New Voltage Families – For some time, nearly all cordless power tools were 12.0 volt, 14.4 colt and 18 volt. Lately we have seen huge growth in 24 volt and 36 volt drills. The new li-ion technology has also enabled a new range of lightweight 10.8 volt drills and power tools from Bosch, DeWalt and Makita.
- New Tools – When first launched, the market focus was on cordless drills and drill drivers. The new technology has seen these product lines expand greatly with a wide range of cordless nailers, torches, grinders, impact wrenches, saws and cordless combi kits now available.
- Cordless Accessories – Manufacturers like Bosch, DeWalt, Festool and Makita have developed a wide range of SDS drill bits and drills sets, designed to achieve maximum efficiency when used with power tools.
The launch in June 2011 of the new DeWalt XR Cordless Power Tool range now offers customers the widest range of li-ion battery drills and tools on the market.
